VMWare Workstation Pro - for free (for personal use!)
Whilst I'd love to say every app I want to run in my home lab works well with Docker or similar, it's often the case I end up using a full VM for emulation - and VMware workstation has remained a solid option for this for years (especially around running a number of high resources VM's - for that reason alone I've been a paid home user for the best part of a decade!)... so it's particularly great news that you can now get both the Linux and Windows versions for free though doing so isn't quite as easy as clicking a public facing download link - here's the details:
-
Register for a Broadcom account (https://login.broadcom.com/login/signout) - it's free!
-
Navigate to https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/productdownloads?subfamily=VMware%20Workstation%20Pro
-
Click on the version you want ("Personal Use" versions) and then agree to the T&C's and click download (you may get an export agreement to fill in too, though that is also pain free!).
It took me a while to find the option (since the customer portal was determined to show me other products and it wasn't obvious where to find VMware's portfolio!) so I'm hoping that helps others!
